Denzel Washington’s Next Big Movie Has Hollywood Paying Attention

Denzel Washington is lining up another major Hollywood project — and this one pairs him with the filmmaker who spent years turning Mission: Impossible into one of the industry’s biggest action franchises.

Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber’s United Artists have officially greenlit an untitled thriller starring Washington, with Christopher McQuarrie set to direct. The movie is already scheduled for a theatrical release on October 1, 2027.

That combination alone is enough to make the project one of the more intriguing films now taking shape for 2027.

But the story suggests this won’t simply be another giant action spectacle.

Denzel Is Going Dark Again

The film centers on a former police detective serving a life sentence who receives a terminal brain cancer diagnosis.

Given compassionate release with only months left to live, he returns home and attempts to reconnect with the estranged daughter he left behind — along with a grandson he has never known.

There’s just one problem: whatever happened before he went to prison apparently isn’t finished with him.

The official premise makes clear that the detective wants to leave his old life behind and repair the damage he caused, but his past comes looking for him anyway.

It sounds like exactly the kind of morally complicated role Washington has repeatedly turned into must-watch material.

From Training Day and Man on Fire to American Gangster, Inside Man and the Equalizer films, Washington has built some of his most memorable performances around men operating in uncomfortable territory between justice, violence, guilt and redemption.

This new character could fit comfortably into that tradition — while potentially giving Washington more emotional material to work with than a straightforward action movie.

Christopher McQuarrie Without Tom Cruise

The other reason Hollywood will be watching is McQuarrie.

For years, his name has been closely connected to Tom Cruise. McQuarrie directed multiple installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, including Rogue Nation, Fallout, Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning.

Now he gets another heavyweight leading man.

And Denzel Washington is a very different kind of movie star.

McQuarrie became famous for elaborate action filmmaking and massive practical set pieces, but this project appears — at least from what has been revealed so far — to lean heavily into crime, family and character drama.

That could make the Washington-McQuarrie pairing considerably more interesting than simply watching the director attempt to recreate the Mission: Impossible formula with a new actor.

The screenplay comes from Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, whose credits include Into the Dark and Edge of Fear.

Washington Isn’t Slowing Down

At an age when plenty of Hollywood stars dramatically reduce their workload, Washington’s schedule remains packed.

His recent projects have included Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, while he is also set to appear with Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Netflix’s The Take, previously known as Here Comes the Flood.

That makes the McQuarrie film another major addition to what is becoming a surprisingly busy stretch of Washington’s career.

There’s also something notable about Amazon MGM putting the film in theaters.

The company has been pushing deeper into traditional theatrical releases, and attaching Washington and McQuarrie gives it a project that doesn’t need superheroes, existing comic-book mythology or another decades-old franchise to attract attention.

It’s an original thriller built around two recognizable names.

Hollywood could use more of those.

One of 2027’s Most Interesting Pairings

Plenty remains unknown. The movie still doesn’t have an official title, and much of the supporting cast has yet to be revealed publicly.

But the basic ingredients are already unusually strong: Denzel Washington playing a deeply compromised former detective, Christopher McQuarrie behind the camera, a crime story involving unfinished business, and a studio committing to a theatrical release.

The film is currently set to arrive October 1, 2027.

If McQuarrie brings the tension and Washington brings the intensity, that date could suddenly become one worth remembering.
